Fabriano
Fabriano was built in the year 409 after the barbarian invasions had caused the collapse of the Roman municipalities of Attidium and Tuficum.
In the year 1160 it became a free commune. Its international renown is combined with the production of paper (sec. XIII) and the transformation of its manufacturing processes, including watermarks. In the fourteenth century gave birth to the painter Gentile da Fabriano. In the second half of sec. XIV, after long disputes, the family of Chiavelli transformed the free Comune in lordship.
In the XV sec. Pope Eugene IV took her into the service of the pontifical see.
In 1849 it was part of the Roman Republic and later, in 1860, the Kingdom of Italy was annexed. It is home to the paper and filigree museum housed in the premises of the former convent of San Domenico. The exhibition is divided into three sections through which the 700 years of history of paper are illustrated.
